INTRO
Stefanie has been collecting baseball cards for several years
now. She never had a big problem keeping track of the cards she
had, until a couple of years ago when she started collecting to
complete sets and expanded to basketball cards. Then I started
collecting sport cards and we both collecting non-sport cards.
Our inventory grew faster and faster. Then we started going to
card shows looking for the good deal on a good investment card.
We finally reached the point where we needed a way to keep track
of what we have.
I checked out different shareware programs, but found them to be
unsuitable for our purposes because we have so many different
types of cards. All the shareware programs that I found were for
a specific sport and I was unable to find one for non-sport
cards. I read complete descriptions on about half a dozen dif-
ferent commercial programs. Most were unsuitable for our partic-
ular needs unless we wanted to invest in several different pro-
grams or we would need to buy a "module" for each type of card we
were collecting. I found that this would be a rather expensive
method of maintaining an inventory for what, for the most part,
is a hobby.
Since I like to play around with programming, I decided to create
my own program. Thus began what would become many hours of work,
writing the program, and then re-writing because I wanted to add
something. This program will allow you to store any type of
trading card that exists today. It will not track value because,
no matter whether you can put card values in a data base or not,
true value tracking is impossible with the way card values fluc-
tuate from month to month.
REGISTRATION
This program is fully functional in the form that you received
it. There are, however, two differences between the registered
and unregistered versions.
The unregistered version will only allow you to store 500 entries
in your data base. If you have only a small collection (less
than 500 entries) feel free to use this program to your hearts
desire without registration, unless, of course, you wish to
register it anyway. I will always be more than happy to accept
your money.
Upon submitting the proper registration fee, you will receive the
latest version of the program along with a new TCO.KEY file.
This key file, when placed in the directory with your program
file will activate the part of the program which allows unlimited
records (limited only by free disk storage space) in your data
base.
With the key, the program will also print your name on all print-
outs and your name and serial number will be printed on one of
the opening screens.
I'm not out to get rich with this program. If I were, it would
be wrapped in some fancy package sitting on some store shelf. I
do, however, feel that if you like the program and wish to use
it, I should get something for all of my work. That is why I
have crippled it in the manner that I have.
For a $15 registration fee, you will receive a disk with the
latest program version and your key. If there is more than one
person in your immediate family that would like to use this
program, I have no problem with one key being used by all. But
the same name will be printed on all printouts. Therefore, if
you would like to have a separate key for each person, I will
make up additional keys at the time of initial registration for
only $2.50 each. They will be included on the disk containing
your program and key.
To register this program, print out the file REGISTER.FRM (at the
DOS prompt type COPY REGISTER.FRM PRN). Fill out the form and
mail it along with a check or money order to the address shown on
the form.
STARTING THE PROGRAM
To Run this program, you must first ensure that you have the
TCO.EXE, TCO.KEY and TCO.CFG files in the directory you wish to
run the program from. The program will not work unless you have
the .KEY and .CFG files present.
You also need to ensure that you have the CARD.CNT file in your
data directory. You can use the same directory/drive for all of
your files.
You may need to edit the .CFG file, depending on which
drive/directory you plan to use for your program and data.
The .CFG file comes set for using drive A for everything. If you
decide to use a floppy drive, you will need to format a blank
disk to use for your data base. A 360K disk will hold approx-
imately 3500 records.
The .CFG file consists of 2 lines. The first line tells the
program where the program, TCO.KEY and TCO.KEY files are. It is
mainly there for future use, but is never the less still required
at this time. The second line tells the program where to find
the database files. You must include the complete path to these
files.
EXAMPLE: C:\TCO
C:\TCO\DATA
WARNING---Do not put a "\" at the end of these lines. The pro-
gram will not work properly if you do.
The .KEY file contains coded information that tells the program
if it is registered and if so, to whom and the serial number. If
the program is not registered, you will be limited to 500
records. Under no circumstances should you change anything in
this file. If you do, the program may very likely cease to work
properly, and the data files you have may become corrupt.
QUITTING
You can escape from any menu by pressing "Q". You should use
this function to escape all the way back to the main menu and
then exit the program. If you fail to do this, and you just turn
the computer off or re-boot it, your data files may become cor-
rupt.

NOTE: All fields are optional. You may leave any field blank
that you wish.
Card Company: Put the name of the company that prints the cards
or the Brand name in this field. Up to 12 charac-
ters. Examples - TOPPS, LEAF, UPPER DECK.
Year: The last 2 digits of the year of issue.
Series: This field originally came about because some
cards have letters as part of the number, such as
holograms are usually indicated with an "H". In
order to get a true sort, I had to separate the
letter from the number. With more and more
companies putting out special sets (TOPPS STADIUM
CLUB; FLEER ULTRA) and subsets, there arose the
need for a way to indicate this. You can use any
characters you want to indicate these sets, but
you are limited to 2 characters. I keep it
simple and use "SC" for STADIUM CLUB and "UL" for
ULTRA.
Card Number: Use numbers only in this field. If you use any
characters other than numbers, then the card
number will revert to 0.
Sport Category: This is the type of sport; EXAMPLE - baseball.
Maximum of 12 characters.
Team: This field allows up to 12 characters. You can
put anything you want in here to identify the
team. Whatever you decide to use, though, you
need to remain consistent. A future update to
the program will allow for the printing of team
listings.
Player Last Name: Self explanatory - 12 characters maximum. If a
player is a "JR" I indicate that in this field.
Player First Name: Self explanatory.
Location Stored: This field allows up to 10 characters to
indicate where you have this card stored.
Quantity: How many of this particular card you have. Up
to 99.
Special Information: This field allows up to 20 characters for
whatever information/comments you wish to
input.

The fields shown are the only ones available for searching You
only need to fill in one field to do a search. The program will
find all records that match exactly the field(s) you fill in.
Once a record is found and displayed, you will have the option of
changing or deleting the record; quitting or continuing the
search. Be sure that you no longer need the record before you
choose to delete it. Once it is deleted it is gone forever
unless you input it again.
If you choose to change the information, you only have to type in
the fields that you want to change. If you do not wish to change
a field, just press "ENTER" to go to the next field. However, if
you type one character, you will have to redo the entire field.

for a listing format that is not available, feel free to let me
know and I will try to accommodate you as best as possible.
SORT CARDS
Choosing option D from the main menu will sort your database. If
you are using a floppy disk for your database, ensure that your
free disk space is at least as many K-bytes as the size of your
database. You can check this by looking at the directory of the
disk and checking to see how big your CARD.DTA file is. If you
do not have enough space left on you disk, you will not be able
to sort the database.
Depending on how big your database is, and the speed of your
computer and drive, it may take a while to sort your records.
SUGGESTIONS TO THE PROGRAMMER

free to write to me. I will seriously consider all
suggestions/request for possible inclusion in future updates to
this program. You can send all correspondence concerning this
