  71.                                         INTRO
  72.
  73.           Stefanie  has  been collecting baseball cards for  several  years
  74.           now.  She never had a big problem keeping track of the cards  she
  75.           had,  until a couple of years ago when she started collecting  to
  76.           complete  sets and expanded to basketball cards.  Then I  started
  77.           collecting  sport cards and we both collecting  non-sport  cards.
  78.           Our  inventory grew faster and faster.  Then we started going  to
  79.           card  shows looking for the good deal on a good investment  card.
  80.           We finally reached the point where we needed a way to keep  track
  81.           of what we have.
  82.
  83.           I checked out different shareware programs, but found them to  be
  84.           unsuitable  for  our purposes because we have so  many  different
  85.           types of cards.  All the shareware programs that I found were for
  86.           a  specific  sport  and I was unable to find  one  for  non-sport
  87.           cards.   I read complete descriptions on about half a dozen  dif-
  88.           ferent commercial programs.  Most were unsuitable for our partic-
  89.           ular  needs unless we wanted to invest in several different  pro-
  90.           grams or we would need to buy a "module" for each type of card we
  91.           were  collecting.  I found that this would be a rather  expensive
  92.           method  of maintaining an inventory for what, for the most  part,
  93.           is a hobby.
  94.
  95.           Since I like to play around with programming, I decided to create
  96.           my own program.  Thus began what would become many hours of work,
  97.           writing the program, and then re-writing because I wanted to  add
  98.           something.   This  program will allow you to store  any  type  of
  99.           trading card that exists today.  It will not track value because,
  100.           no matter whether you can put card values in a data base or  not,
  101.           true value tracking is impossible with the way card values  fluc-
  102.           tuate from month to month.
  103.
  104.
  105.
  106.                                     REGISTRATION
  107.
  108.           This  program is fully functional in the form that  you  received
  109.           it.   There are, however, two differences between the  registered
  110.           and unregistered versions.
  111.
  112.           The unregistered version will only allow you to store 500 entries
  113.           in  your  data base.  If you have only a small  collection  (less
  114.           than  500 entries) feel free to use this program to  your  hearts
  115.           desire  without  registration,  unless, of course,  you  wish  to
  116.           register it anyway.   I will always be more than happy to  accept
  117.           your money.
  118.
  119.           Upon submitting the proper registration fee, you will receive the
  120.           latest  version  of the program along with a  new  TCO.KEY  file.
  121.           This  key  file, when placed in the directory with  your  program
  122.           file will activate the part of the program which allows unlimited
  123.           records  (limited only by free disk storage space) in  your  data
  124.           base.
  125.           With the key, the program will also print your name on all print-
  126.           outs  and your name and serial number will be printed on  one  of
  127.           the opening screens.
  128.
  129.
  130.
  131.
  132.
  133.
  134.
  135.
  136.           I'm  not out to get rich with this program.  If I were, it  would
  137.           be wrapped in some fancy package sitting on some store shelf.   I
  138.           do,  however, feel that if you like the program and wish  to  use
  139.           it,  I  should get something for all of my work.  That is  why  I
  140.           have crippled it in the manner that I have.
  141.
  142.           For  a  $15 registration fee, you will receive a  disk  with  the
  143.           latest  program version and your key.  If there is more than  one
  144.           person  in  your  immediate family that would like  to  use  this
  145.           program,  I have no problem with one key being used by all.   But
  146.           the  same name will be printed on all printouts.   Therefore,  if
  147.           you  would  like to have a separate key for each person,  I  will
  148.           make  up additional keys at the time of initial registration  for
  149.           only  $2.50 each.  They will be included on the  disk  containing
  150.           your program and key.
  151.
  152.           To register this program, print out the file REGISTER.FRM (at the
  153.           DOS  prompt type COPY REGISTER.FRM PRN).  Fill out the  form  and
  154.           mail it along with a check or money order to the address shown on
  155.           the form.
  156.
  157.
  158.
  159.                                 STARTING THE PROGRAM
  160.
  161.           To  Run  this program, you must first ensure that  you  have  the
  162.           TCO.EXE,  TCO.KEY and TCO.CFG files in the directory you wish  to
  163.           run the program from.  The program will not work unless you  have
  164.           the .KEY and .CFG files present.
  165.
  166.           You  also need to ensure that you have the CARD.CNT file in  your
  167.           data directory.  You can use the same directory/drive for all  of
  168.           your files.
  169.
  170.           You  may  need  to  edit  the  .CFG  file,  depending  on   which
  171.           drive/directory  you  plan  to use for  your  program  and  data.
  172.           The .CFG file comes set for using drive A for everything.  If you
  173.           decide  to  use a floppy drive, you will need to format  a  blank
  174.           disk  to use for your data base.  A 360K disk will  hold  approx-
  175.           imately 3500 records.
  176.
  177.           The  .CFG  file consists of 2 lines.  The first  line  tells  the
  178.           program where the program, TCO.KEY and TCO.KEY files are.  It  is
  179.           mainly there for future use, but is never the less still required
  180.           at  this time.  The second line tells the program where  to  find
  181.           the database files.  You must include the complete path to  these
  182.           files.
  183.
  184.
  185.
  186.                    EXAMPLE:   C:\TCO
  187.                               C:\TCO\DATA
  188.
  189.           WARNING---Do  not put a "\" at the end of these lines.  The  pro-
  190.           gram will not work properly if you do.
  191.
  192.
  193.
  194.
  195.
  196.
  197.
  198.
  199.
  200.
  201.           The  .KEY file contains coded information that tells the  program
  202.           if it is registered and if so, to whom and the serial number.  If
  203.           the  program  is  not  registered, you will  be  limited  to  500
  204.           records.   Under no circumstances should you change  anything  in
  205.           this file.  If you do, the program may very likely cease to  work
  206.           properly, and the data files you have may become corrupt.
  207.
  208.
  209.
  210.                                       QUITTING
  211.
  212.           You  can  escape from any menu by pressing "Q".  You  should  use
  213.           this  function  to escape all the way back to the main  menu  and
  214.           then exit the program.  If you fail to do this, and you just turn
  215.           the  computer off or re-boot it, your data files may become  cor-
  216.           rupt.

  301.                           holograms are usually indicated with an "H".  In

  307.                           characters  you want to indicate these sets,  but
  308.                           you  are  limited  to 2 characters.   I  keep  it
  309.                           simple and use "SC" for STADIUM CLUB and "UL" for
  310.                           ULTRA.
  311.
  312.            Card Number:   Use numbers only in this field.   If you use  any

  759.
  760.           Choosing option D from the main menu will sort your database.  If
  761.           you  are using a floppy disk for your database, ensure that  your
  762.           free  disk space is at least as many K-bytes as the size of  your
  763.           database.  You can check this by looking at the directory of  the
  764.           disk  and checking to see how big your CARD.DTA file is.  If  you
  765.           do  not have enough space left on you disk, you will not be  able
  766.           to sort the database.
  767.
  768.           Depending  on  how big your database is, and the  speed  of  your
  769.           computer and drive, it may take a while to sort your records.
